Let's face it folks...there are revolutions happening worldwide. From
Greece
to
Brazil
and
everywhere in between
, people are taking direct action toward fixing the problems plaguing their world.
Because of media reports focusing on groups such as
Anonymous
,
Lulzsec
,
Wikileaks
, etc, people in the United States are being exposed to activism in their homes like never before seen by my generation. Images of these groups can seem unobtainable to the average citizen however. They are portrayed by the media much like crusaders and vigilantes from comic books. This makes it very easy to sit back and root for them to succeed without contributing in any way.
In order to help inspire you to take a stand, I'd like to point out some of the small ways in which you can contribute. How much or little you do is up to personal choice, but no matter what side you're on, I think it's important that you follow your heart and do rather than hope, wish, dream, etc. If you want to be able to one day tell your loved ones how hard you fought as a youth for what you believe in (as opposed to against what you do not believe in), here's some easy steps down that path:
Volunteer within your community
This is one of the easiest ways to get involved in making the world a better place. Donate a few hours during the week or every other weekend to your
local thrift store
,
soup kitchen
, school, or even a
local business
in your area (preferably in an industry you're passionate about).
Get to know the charity workers, social workers, teachers, coaches, entrepreneurs, etc in your community, as they are the ones who know the problems of your community the best.
Talking to these people will give you an idea of what problems exist in your area. You'll also likely run into a group that is working on something you already love. These are a great start toward meaningful activism.
Join/Follow Charitable and Activist Social Groups Online
This is a very underrated part of the process. The beauty of the internet is the ability to share information quickly and efficiently over a large area. You may not be aware, but many of your favorite social networks already have active groups. These groups allow you to keep an "inside edge" on the issues you most believe in from people who are in the know.
Facebook
, for example has groups such as
Fallout Shelter,
Anonymous Victory, etc where members share a constant stream of relevant information, news, media coverage/emissions, etc for a wide variety of issues.
Twitter
is often overlooked by the older generations. One of the most frequent responses I get when I mention the site to anyone 25+ is "Every village has an idiot, and thanks to Twitter, every idiot now has a voice." I imagine this is a joke that originated from
Jay Leno
,
Seinfeld
, or some other comedic relic I never got, because I don't know the source, and
Gen X
is not that collectively creative, I'm sorry. I digress...
Twitter is a very powerful tool when coupled with a couple of quick Google searches. I wanted to learn more about the
music industry
,
hactivism
, and
foreclosure defense
. By searching for key terms within these subject ranges, I was able to come up with Twitter accounts of people within these industries who were not only experts, but sharing knowledge with the general public. These are not just "
village idiots
," these are successful people who are, by sharing their knowledge on
Twitter
, activists.
Even LinkedIn has various local groups you can network with. Although I personally have no interest in the site myself, it does not mean that it can not be utilized in the same way.
Talk/Communicate/Write/Discuss/Share
The more you tell the people around you about the stories that interest you, the more you will find yourself surrounded by people who share a lot of the same opinions, experiences, etc as you. Don't be afraid to let go of those in the past that don't support you.
Interpersonal relationships fade with time
. Holding on to memories of them does not accomplish much.
The more people around you who enjoy spending their time the same ways, the more likely you will be to begin getting involved together. More information will be shared. More opportunities will present themselves. You can literally talk your way to the top.
There's many other ways to get involved, but these are just a start. The point is that it's possible, and you can do it! Now get up, get out there, and make your voice heard. If you're going to live your life as a statistic, you may as well
choose your own adventure
.
