How I Utilized Twitter Today

Yesterday I utilized Twitter to be productive in a way I never thought possible. While spending my normal hour in the morning surfing through comments and interacting with my community, I came across a mention of the show Waterloo Road. The name itself intrigued me, so I went to the show's page to see what it was all about.

The premise definitely intrigued me, but I only briefly scanned it, because I noticed on their website that they listed the soundtrack for every episode, and the soundtracks were extensive. The names I recognized were some of my favorite artists and songs (Nobody hates Rihanna's Rude Boy, and Band of Horses has been growing on me a lot lately), so I began to delve into the soundtracks even further.

In short, I spent 16 hours yesterday listening to music, watching videos, etc. To many on the outside, this could look like a waste of a day. To me, I just took a crash course in current pop music trends in the UK, Europe, and United States. Wikipedia and Google at my side, I explored the discographies, biographies, and other various musings of a variety of artists such as:

Professor Green,
Lily Allen,
Agnes Obel,
Feeder,
Rachel Stevens,
The Drums,
We Are Scientists.

I stepped in their shoes and felt their art, inspiration, and motivation, and I learned something from each of them. All in all, I now feel like a more developed artist and musician. I am more confident in my abilities having heard some of the best out there right now that are doing what I'm trying to do...

I worked harder at pursuing my dreams yesterday alone than most people will ever work toward anything in their lives. I'm working full speed toward my goals. I'm doing it with the passion of someone half my age and the wisdom of someone twice my senior. I am pouring my heart into perfecting my craft, both artistically and as a business. Tomorrow I may work on a business plan in between scoring sessions.

Anyway, I read some crazy stuff today. Don't forget to check out Anonymous' #antisec movement on Twitter, where they've released (amongst other things) Chinga la Migra Dos which will more than likely get AZ law enforcement riled up and looking for them. Hopefully none of us innocent bystanders are bothered for trying to report the facts.

The First Score

Tonight I started working on my first film score. I'm quite used to an array of recording equipment, software, and methods, so I've got a good feeling it'll turn out well. Things tend to work out when you're well prepared...

Luckily the project came at a time when I was having a little bit of trouble focusing. I had spent most of May/June partying and lazing around. This in turn led to me catching up on a lot of movies and TV shows, as I had largely missed out on the majority of pop culture from 2007 on. I think I may be the only human being in the world that hasn't seen Avatar, haha. I just wasn't interested.

Anyway, the point is that my vacation worked out like the beginning of a Bond movie, where all sorts of fun gadgets are given to you, and they turn out to be exactly what you need on your next mission. That is about as close as I'll ever get to a comparison to 007, so give me a minute to dwell...

....

So I'm slowly building my fan base, and building my foundation as solid as possible in every direction I can push myself to. It's 2:30am, and I'm doing exactly what I was doing at 9:30am, which is studying the news, working on a project in the studio, and blogging. I'm standing stronger now than I ever did within Corporate America. I highly recommend everyone try working independently for at least a few hours a day until you're comfortable taking the leap to follow your dreams and passions.

It's a scary leap, especially at the beginning, but things get better eventually as long as you keep at it...hell I've only been seriously pursuing a career in music business for about 3 solid months, and already I've recorded enough material to utilize as a resume and show improvement. Because of this, I have been able to work with many other artists, and I'm already working providing music for a film that will be seen next month by millions of potential new fans.

This is what it feels like the day before something important in your life. Tomorrow is a test day. If you don't perform well on tests, then you can't handle the pressure of greatness. I will not fail. This will be the best work I've ever done.

Until the next one...

Participating in Modern Day Activism

Let's face it folks...there are revolutions happening worldwide. From  Greece to Brazil and everywhere in between, people are taking direct action toward fixing the problems plaguing their world.

Because of media reports focusing on groups such as Anonymous, Lulzsec, Wikileaks, etc, people in the United States are being exposed to activism in their homes like never before seen by my generation. Images of these groups can seem unobtainable to the average citizen however. They are portrayed by the media much like crusaders and vigilantes from comic books. This makes it very easy to sit back and root for them to succeed without contributing in any way.

In order to help inspire you to take a stand, I'd like to point out some of the small ways in which you can contribute. How much or little you do is up to personal choice, but no matter what side you're on, I think it's important that you follow your heart and do rather than hope, wish, dream, etc. If you want to be able to one day tell your loved ones how hard you fought as a youth for what you believe in (as opposed to against what you do not believe in), here's some easy steps down that path:

Volunteer within your community
This is one of the easiest ways to get involved in making the world a better place. Donate a few hours during the week or every other weekend to your local thrift store, soup kitchen, school, or even a local business in your area (preferably in an industry you're passionate about).

Get to know the charity workers, social workers, teachers, coaches, entrepreneurs, etc in your community, as they are the ones who know the problems of your community the best.

Talking to these people will give you an idea of what problems exist in your area. You'll also likely run into a group that is working on something you already love. These are a great start toward meaningful activism.

Join/Follow Charitable and Activist Social Groups Online
This is a very underrated part of the process. The beauty of the internet is the ability to share information quickly and efficiently over a large area. You may not be aware, but many of your favorite social networks already have active groups. These groups allow you to keep an "inside edge" on the issues you most believe in from people who are in the know.

Facebook, for example has groups such as Fallout Shelter, Anonymous Victory, etc where members share a constant stream of relevant information, news, media coverage/emissions, etc for a wide variety of issues.

Twitter is often overlooked by the older generations. One of the most frequent responses I get when I mention the site to anyone 25+ is "Every village has an idiot, and thanks to Twitter, every idiot now has a voice." I imagine this is a joke that originated from Jay Leno, Seinfeld, or some other comedic relic I never got, because I don't know the source, and Gen X is not that collectively creative, I'm sorry. I digress...

Twitter is a very powerful tool when coupled with a couple of quick Google searches. I wanted to learn more about the music industry, hactivism, and foreclosure defense. By searching for key terms within these subject ranges, I was able to come up with Twitter accounts of people within these industries who were not only experts, but sharing knowledge with the general public. These are not just "village idiots," these are successful people who are, by sharing their knowledge on Twitter, activists.

Even LinkedIn has various local groups you can network with. Although I personally have no interest in the site myself, it does not mean that it can not be utilized in the same way.

Talk/Communicate/Write/Discuss/Share
The more you tell the people around you about the stories that interest you, the more you will find yourself surrounded by people who share a lot of the same opinions, experiences, etc as you. Don't be afraid to let go of those in the past that don't support you. Interpersonal relationships fade with time. Holding on to memories of them does not accomplish much.

The more people around you who enjoy spending their time the same ways, the more likely you will be to begin getting involved together. More information will be shared. More opportunities will present themselves. You can literally talk your way to the top.

There's many other ways to get involved, but these are just a start. The point is that it's possible, and you can do it! Now get up, get out there, and make your voice heard. If you're going to live your life as a statistic, you may as well choose your own adventure.

Passion is Everything

Passion...

It is known by many words and inspires many things in people. Dreams fuel our passion, and a man who can not dream is incapable of passion.

Here's a few of the ways I've learned to harvest passion to work toward my end goals:

Passion Inspires Creativity/Luck

It is easy to look at those we consider "creative minds" and say that they are "lucky" to have had the right set of circumstances come to them at the right time. All of these are ways of labeling perspectives of the same event. Here's why:

Think about something you were passionate about in your lifetime (when you met your spouse, going to a certain university, the day you landed your dream job, etc)...the further back in your memory you have to go, the more you need to understand this concept. The reason that memory sticks in your head is because you had achieved something you were passionate about, and the reason you achieved it is because you were passionate about it. People who seem from your perspective to be either creative or lucky have a firm grasp of this idea in one form or another.

A person who is creative seems from the outside to be able to magically materialize ideas from thin air. This is a somewhat accurate description, however, ask any creative person, and they will tell you that they practiced to be creative because they were passionate about being creative. This means that the only difference between the "creative" and everyone else is the willingness to perceive yourself as creative. When a creative and a non-creative person are presented with the same variable/obstacle, the non-creative person is less likely to succeed because they are not passionate about the outcome.

Luck is simply another conjugate for creativity. Creativity is in the 1st person, whereas luck is in the 3rd person perspective. Creativity implies an awareness of the solution, whereas luck implies an awareness of the problem.

Passion Leads to Success

I have been scraping by a living for the past 7 months now, but I haven't just been wasting my time. I have been wearing many hats  and burning many candles from many ends. It would be easy to write off my time as wasted, panic, give up, take an easy way out (this can be interpreted in many ways from getting a corporate job to suicide, however it relates to stories you know of), etc.

I have not given up yet, however. I have been working tirelessly for 14 - 20 hours per day working towards my dream. I have been practicing and improving at every step of the way on every end. I've studied as much as I possibly could about every aspect of the businesses I'm going to attempt to make a living in. I'm slowly but surely learning how to build the resources I need. My childhood dreams now have realistic expectations attached to them. They have graphs, numbers, deadlines, percentages, project names, etc. They exist because of my passion.

I know I will be successful because I am passionate about what I do and I will never stop moving towards my dream. I'll keep improving, keep studying, keep working, keep adding, keep trying new things, etc.

Passion Causes Happiness

At the end of the day, you only get one life. Would you prefer spending your life telling people about how good someone else's personal/professional life is, or would you rather be the person everyone's talking about? If, like me, you prefer the latter, the only way to get there is by being happy in your life. Once you're happy, everything will begin to go your way. Stresses will subside, etc.

...or you can not believe me. Believe those around you instead...you may as well, because in 20 years, you're going to be in the same place surrounded by the same people and nothing in your world will have changed. I hope that's what will make you happy...
